The metamorphosis of the caterpillar, a vermiform creature into something as beautiful and delicate as a lovely little butterfly has always been taken up as an important metaphor in literature and culture because of the sheer simplicity: the caterpillar like the ugly duckling of the fable, struggles and shuts itself off to emerge as the beautiful butterfly.
As a result, there are many spiritual connotations that have been attached to the butterfly as well. Many cultures and mythologies revere it as something sacred, holy and symbolic.
For example, it’s an old Bengali saying that butterflies herald wedding bells and that if one lands on you, at home, it brings love and romance in your life.
A reminder of our spiritual journey.
Most often, we use the analogy of a butterfly’s life cycle with our own spiritual journey. From an egg, it hatches into a caterpillar. After a few days, it enters into a cocoon and finally emerges as a beautiful butterfly.
Our spiritual transformation also follows the same stages. From an ordinary human being, we crawl our way as the caterpillar does. After being tired of much crawling, we come to believe that we can do more than just crawl.
We create our own cocoon by journeying inward, meditating, praying, reading, searching, and studying spiritual truths.
