The metamorphosis of the caterpillar, a vermiform creature into something as beautiful and delicate as a lovely little butterfly has always been taken up as an important metaphor in literature and culture because of the sheer simplicity: the caterpillar like the ugly duckling of the fable, struggles and shuts itself off to emerge as the beautiful butterfly.
As a result, there are many spiritual connotations that have been attached to the butterfly as well. Many cultures and mythologies revere it as something sacred, holy and symbolic.
For example, it’s an old Bengali saying that butterflies herald wedding bells and that if one lands on you, at home, it brings love and romance in your life.
A reminder of our spiritual journey.
Most often, we use the analogy of a butterfly’s life cycle with our own spiritual journey. From an egg, it hatches into a caterpillar. After a few days, it enters into a cocoon and finally emerges as a beautiful butterfly.
Our spiritual transformation also follows the same stages. From an ordinary human being, we crawl our way as the caterpillar does. After being tired of much crawling, we come to believe that we can do more than just crawl.
We create our own cocoon by journeying inward, meditating, praying, reading, searching, and studying spiritual truths.
A power animal message.
The Native Americans and Shamanic cultures revered the power animals. These power animals teach us by their specific qualities and strengths.
The qualities of a butterfly signify joy, freedom, creativity, and change. And its transformative powers enlighten us about shapeshifting or metamorphosis and soul evolution.
Seeing a butterfly in a dream or in waking life means you are receiving a power animal message.
It’s the best time to stop for a moment and evaluate what’s going on with your life. There might be something in your life that needs to be transformed.
Butterflies are also great at reminding you to enjoy freedom and creativity.
A reminder to move on with your transformation.
Seeing a butterfly might be a reminder that you are ready to move on with your transformation.
It’s a sign that you are on the right path of your transformational journey and that you are spiritually ready to move one with your transformation.
When you see butterflies in groups, their message is more prominent and urgent.
A message from the spiritual world.
The presence of a butterfly is not to be ignored since it also conveys spiritual messages.
Since angels rarely appear to humans, the spirit world might use butterflies to communicate their messages to humans more frequently.
When a butterfly instantaneously appears before you, your guardian angel or spirit guide might be sending you a message.
This might be a good time to slow down and evaluate what’s going on around you and in your life at the moment.
- That your spiritual journey should begin
The butterfly as stated earlier, stands for liminality, transition, transcendence and also change. The sighting of a creature that itself comes out of the hardest of shells after having (literally) reorganised itself thoroughly till it’s the most beautiful version of itself is something that should be obvious: you should take more time out to think on yourself, to look inside of you for answers you believe you and the world around you need, bad.
If you are grieving or mourning the loss of someone, something or simply a bond/attachment that you were very proud of, a butterfly sighting can just be a signal from your lost loved one stating that they are returning in some form or the other in your life or simply that this is not the end of your journey; you have to carry on, on your own mettle from now on. They trust you to not let them and yourself down.
- A guardian angel
The spiritual realm often has benevolent beings that only seek to protect and nurture a human being. They have no ulterior motive in mind, nor do they have any hidden agenda. One of the ways in which these guardian angels talk to you is by sending butterflies your way: they herald news that cannot be conveyed in conventional ways.
- The start of a new era
In the fields of romance and creativity. Butterflies stand for both in almost all Shamanic cultures. They are the spirit world’s way of saying that you have reached that moment in your life when you must branch out and bloom in ways neither you nor the ones around you could have ever expected. So buckle up and get ready to reach new heights.
You’ve been in your own cocoon for long enough. The world wants to see your plumes and you deserve to fly. So do yourself and the world around a favour and go for it.
